Sometimes, looks can be deceiving. One ordinary door can unlock a world of art.

You might look at this door in a Watford City coffee shop and think that behind it lies storage or a bathroom. But if you open it and walk through it, you'll find so much more. This is Cameron Horning's art studio, a much better situation than his previous workshop.

"It was basically trying to set it up in my garage, and it was so cumbersome, having to move things and pets," said Horning, Shred the Lead Studio.

Horning spent most of his childhood in North Dakota, and when the oil boom began, he returned home. When things slowed down, he decided it was the perfect time to jump into his passion.

"I've always wanted to do my own thing and answer to myself and be successful at it. I guess when the oilfield slowed down, it was like 'Heck, why not?'" Horning said.

In his studio, Horning draws, paints and even silk screens fabric. It allows him to put his artistic mind to work.

"It's limitless. I mean, life is just full of it. The way that my mind works is I'm constantly snapshotting photos in my head," Horning said.

And the partnership with Door 204 Coffee Shop owner Beth Veeder allows him to not only make his dreams a reality, but display them in a public setting.

"It's perfect. It's perfect. She's been so open and so supportive as far as the art, it's been great," Horning said.

And he's hopeful that his artwork will help inspire others to find their passion and run with it, as he did.

"Whether that's singing or dancing or art and painting or drawing or building, whatever it is, I'd like to think that that's something that can be spawned from that," Horning said.

And hopefully that will open doors of their own, like it did for him.

Some of Horning's latest works pair him up with another local artist, Josh Skogland, who specializes in turning old barn wood into art.

My fiancé and I bought 5.2 acres here and have built a house…our business is doing well. We can't imagine leaving our friends we've made here. It's one of the most welcoming communities I've ever moved to.
