New McKenzie County Tourism Director Announced
Watford City native, Doug Bolken, started as the new Tourism Director of McKenzie County on January 14th. Bolken, who was previously employed by the county, says his new position brings him back to his roots, tourism.
Bolken has been involved in some sort of travel or tourism ever since college, making him the best candidate for the position. Bolken, with his wife and son, moved back to the area in December of 2008 after living in Seattle. While in Seattle, he worked for Holland America Line in charge of Alaska Cruise and CruiseTour Marketing. He also worked for AAA Travel, coordinating joint travel programs for many of the western AAA and CAA clubs.
"With all the changes happening in McKenzie County, I am excited to make sure the face of tourism is included," stated Bolken.
He feels that travelers are not getting the best experience possible due to the lack of accommodations, but that in the coming years it will not be as big of a problem. Watford City, and surrounding areas, are in the process of building new hotels, which will allow for tourism to grow.
In closing, Bolken stated, "In today's economy, I realize that tourism is not the top of mind for many people. Tourism can coexist with the booming economy of Western North Dakota. Ongoing tourism programs will add to the quality of life we all cherish in McKenzie County. I am looking forward to great things for tourism."
